This beautiful cast-iron statue depicts a doe. The animal's noble stance reflects its status as queen of the forest. The artist paid particular attention to the animal's anatomy and muscles, reflecting its vitality. The composition is reminiscent of the drawings by sculptor Pierre-Louis Rouillard (1820-1881) in the Catalogue des fonderies du Val d'Osne. The base on which the doe rests reinforces the naturalist aspect of the piece, as it is the forest floor that the deer is treading on with its feet. The composition of the piece, i.e. the base coupled with the attitude of the doe, echoes the belling stag by sculptor Edouard Navellier (1865-1944) reproduced in the Catalogue des hauts-fourneaux, fonderies et ateliers de construction de Tusey. Nature seems to have reclaimed its place in the work, particularly in the area of the animal's left hind leg, from which new vegetation is growing. This detail, which can only be the result of the passage of time on a piece of this type, adds to the charm of the piece. The same is true of the traces of rust and age.
