Pair of monumental 19th-century vases in ribboned onyx alabaster
Dimensions
Height 28'' ⅜ 72cm
diameter: 34'' ⅝ 88cm
These monumental vases in ribboned onyx alabaster are distinguished by the regular alternation of light (white, cream) and dark (red, brown, ochre) layers. Set on square pedestal bases, the bowls feature a stepped midsection and a thickened lip. The highlight of these pieces lies in the sculptural treatment of the handles, whose bases are adorned with palmettes around which supple serpents coil, their scales rendered with meticulous detail. The sculptor intertwined the reptiles’ bodies with remarkable naturalism and skill. Moreover, the continuous veining of the alabaster allows the serpents to visually blend into the vase itself, both along the handles and around the rim. During the 19th century, the Val d’Osne art foundry revived this elegant type of monumental Neo-Classical vase, characterized by handles adorned with serpents.
