Beautiful Napoleon III style Brèche Saint-Maximin marble mantel from the 19th century. The jambs are composed of recessed paneled sheaths rising up to squares with dentils and crowned with Ionic capitals, their echinus adorned with egg-and-dart. The entablature is equally adorned with recessed panels with at its center a rectangular modillion again with carved out panels and hanging dentils. This motif is echoed in a square version at the heads of the jambs, with carved out circles in the center. The mantel shelf rests upon a cornice that follows the lines of the protuding jambs and modillion. Designed during the Second Empire, the structure of this mantel is inspired both by Roman and Greek Antiquity and by the Renaissance. The symmetry creates harmony and the combination of decorative elements is very elegant. The mantel comes with its richly sculpted brass inset, with vases of imaginative curlicue foliage and flowers, and a Neo-Renaissance grotesque central mask.
