This carved and painted wooden overmantel mirror, designed to be integrated into wainscoting or placed above a fireplace, is in the style of the 18th and 19th centuries. The lower section features a rectangular mirror framed by a scalloped molding. The upper panel is adorned in its center with a pastoral-inspired music trophy carved in relief, depicting a bagpipe—or musette de cour—suspended from a knotted ribbon and surrounded by branches and foliage. This type of ornamentation illustrates the taste for rural life and the theme of the idealized sheepfold, very fashionable in French decorative arts during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. The piece has an antique patina in light tones.
