This finely carved antique Louis XVI style oak mantel bears a rare quality of craftsmanship, and a rich décor of carvings and stucco. The jambs are adorned with molded flutes, rising to gilded floral wreaths made out of stucco. These jambs are similar to pilasters crowned with capitals adorned with rosettes. The entablature is decorated at the center with a low-relief plate featuring four small Cherubs lighting a fire in a wintery landscape. This image is flanked by interlacing curlicue and gilded foliage that runs across the front. The curves below the plate break the straight lines of the mantel. The mantel comes with its original cast iron inserts. The decoration of these plates, follow the same style as the mantel. On the first plate, a man stands on a pedestal surrounded by interlacing foliage and garlands of pearls. On the second, two small Cherubs find warmth near a fire, echoing the image above. The shelf of the mantel follows the lines of the composition, with a succession of receeding lines.

This mantel and overmantel are part of a panelled room presented on the site as item #1530. They are not sold separately
