This sumptuous Louis XVI style fireplace was made in the 19th century in Statuary Carrara marble embellished with rich gilt bronze ornaments. This is the model placed in the 18th century in the Château de Fontainebleau , in the Silver Boudoir (French Boudoir d’argent ) of Queen Marie-Antoinette and designed by the architect Pierre-Marie Rousseau in 1786.
The Queen's Boudoir, designed by Pierre-Marie Rousseau, was entirely decorated according to Marie-Antoinette's taste, who was an admiror of the Antiquity. It is thus branches of ivy, associated with the vitality during Antiquity, which run through the frieze framed by a egg-and-dart frieze which supports the straight lines of this fireplace according to the rigor of the Louis XVI style against the excesses of the rococo style.
Among these interlacing ivy branches, a bow has been carved in bronze, motif to which the delicately fluted jambs echo : they take the form of a quiver. The feathers of the arrows they contain, the motifs at their base, and the beautiful lion heads that adorn them are also made of bronze. Yves Carlier in Le Boudoir de Marie-Antoinette à Fontainebleau, suggests that the sculptor Philippe-Laurent Roland, who is the creator of various elements in the Boudoir, also has intervened in the model of the bronzes of the Fontainebleau fireplace, bronzes then made by the bronzemaker Claude-Jean Pitoin.
The motifs of the bows and especially the quivers are also characteristic of the Louis XVI style and can be found on many elements in the Silver Boudoir as on the legs of the armchairs or those of the secretary: the Boudoir of he Queen was designed with a total harmony both in the colors and in the themes.
