Louis XV style cast iron fireback from the 19th century with mythological decor. The Greek god of time, Chronos, is depicted sitting on a stylized cloud. Son of Ouranos, the Sky, and Gaia, the Earth, Chronos is the king of the Titans and the father of Zeus.
We recognise him by his posture and attributes. The god is represented as an elderly man, adorned with two large wings, armed with his scythe and resting on an hourglass symbolising the passing of time and suggesting his ineluctability. This depiction of the god corresponds to the iconographic codes of modern art, attached to symbolism and the representation of Time.
