This clock was made at the end of the 19^th century. The signature, although not entirely legible, indicates it is the work of a clockmaker named [?]etaille, based in Paris.

The clock consists of a Rouge Griotte marble base and a patinated bronze statuette. The base takes the form of a fluted column set on an octagonal base. The red and gold dial fits harmoniously into this design. The bronze statuette, inspired by antiquity, represents Dionysus playing with a panther: the god, standing, is depicted nude except for his sandals and a goat skin covering one shoulder; he is crowned with grapes, attributes of the wine deity. His lowered head and hand movements suggest the young god playing with an invisible animal.

The original, discovered in Pompeii in 1862, is now housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. It was then considered a representation of Narcissus, who, with a tilted head, admired his reflection in the water, hence the nickname of this statue.

The antique statue gained considerable popularity and led to the creation of many bronze statuettes, notably in Naples. Travelers who acquired them during their visits to Pompeii and Naples helped spread this model.
