This Carrara marble statue, signed “Math Moreau” on the moulded base, represents a Sylph, a spirit of the air, depicted as a slender young woman seated on a fountain in a contemplative pose. The figure’s precarious balance—resting on the support of her left foot and a single finger of her hand—is characteristic of Moreau’s work. The close affinities in the treatment of the so-called “wet” drapery, the bent left arm, and the hand raised to the hair give the figure an attitude comparable to L’Écho and La Vague. As is customary in Mathurin Moreau’s oeuvre, the foot of the basin becomes a site of ornamentation, where vegetal elements are rendered in a naturalistic manner. The model for this sculpture was conceived around 1875. A bronze version of Sylph was presented by Christie’s London in 2021 (sale no. 19799, lot 20).
