A guard-stone is a small obstacle, either a bollard or made of cast iron, placed at the corner of a building or gate post to protect them from the wheels of carriages and cars. They can be stone, metal, limestone or granite and often are superbly decorated. Called in French “chasse-roue” or “bouteroue”.
