This white Carrara marble sculpture was made after 1894 by the French sculptor Félix Soulès (1857 – 1904) and comes directly from his workshop. Félix Soules was born in Eauzes in the Gers region in France in 1857. He first entered the École des Beaux-Arts of Toulouse and the École des Beaux-Arts of Paris where he becomes the student of the sculptor François Jouffroy (1806 - 1882) and later of the sculptor Alexandre Falguière (1831 - 1900). He starts by exhibiting in the Salon des artistes Français, in which he is a member, in 1881 and continues to exhibit his work there each year until his death in 1904. In 1887, he received the second prize of Rome and the Légion d`honneur in 1896. Among his most important works we can name “The Maenad and the goat”, which plaster model obtained a first medal in the Salon des artistes Français in 1892. This sculpture, which is very damaged, is now in the garden of the École des Beaux-Arts of Bordeaux and belongs to the Beaux-Arts museum of the city. We can also name “The abduction of Iphigenia” sculpted in 1892, today kept in the Luxembourg museum in Paris. The sculpture is inspired by the symbolist movement from the end of the 19th century, in which works of art are influenced by spirituality, imagination and dreams. The movement appears as a reaction to the naturalism and realism movements and in parallel of the first subconscious discoveries made by Charcot, Janet and obviously Freud
