This very beautiful antique fireback was made in the beginning of the 18th century, circa 1712 and 1723. It shows the coat of arms of Louis d'Aumont de Rochebaron (1666-1723) surmounted by a Duke crown and a peer coat, framed by the Order of Saint-Michel and the Order of the Holy Spirit and supported by two griffins. Born on the 30th April 1666, Louis d'Aumont de Rochebaron, was marquis of Villequier, then Duke of Aumont and peer of France the 19th March 1704, he's received in the Parliament the 3th July of the same year. In April 1685, he became first man of the King's Bedroom and Maréchal de camp des armées du Roi on the 29th January 1702. The 17th March 1704, he's governor of Boulogne and of the Boulonnais, then Extraordinary Ambassador of England between December 1712 and November 1713. Finally, in 1712 he became Knight of the King's Orders. He died eleven years later in his mansion on the rue de Jouy in Paris. Another identical fireback is indexed, it is conserved in the Château of Ecouen in the Val d'Oise region in France and is illustrated in Philippe Palasi 's book "Plaques de cheminée héraldiques".
