This marble bust of a young woman dressed in a very rich Renaissance costume was executed by Vincent Désiré Faure de Broussé in 1876. It is signed and dated, and can be compared to the bust of a “Florentine patrician” that he exhibited at the Salon of that year.
Vincent Désiré Faure de Broussé (?-1908) was a sculptor who was mainly active at the end of the 19th century. He was a student of Jules Salmson (1823-1902). Inspired by East Asian arts as well as past styles, he was involved in both the Japonism vogue and the historicist movement that spanned the 19th century. He exhibited at the Salons of 1876, 1877, 1878, 1881, and 1883.
This work, among the artist's most popular, was cast in bronze several times; however, the marble bust is a unique piece.
