Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE (1810 – 1892) (Attrib.) Pair of cloisonne enameled Chinese lamps

This rare pair of lamps have been made with Chinese cloisonne enameled vases, and bronze mounted around 1880 in France. The finesse of the cloisonne enamel offers a rich decoration around the body of each lamp. Various scenes with animals are occuring in spaces delimited by stylized foliage. The lamp on the right side is decorated with pheasants and on the second lamp with cranes. On the reverse of each lamp, bouquets of various flowers, butterflies and birds are depicted. The colors used are extremely varied and vivid on a blue background.The decoration in gilded bronze is attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne, a famous Parisian bronzier. The bases of each lamp are formed by four finely chiseled elephant heads, resting on their trunks. The lamps are sold with their original globes ornamented with gilded dragon decoration (Baccarat).These lamps reflect the Chinese vogue that occured in the late 19th century. Asian elements, especially chinese, were reused in European furniture and works of art. Thoses objects were made for the sumptuous interiors.

Matthew (1815-1889) and Willem (1816-1881) HORRIX (attrib. to) Important dining room set in "Black Forest" style

This dining room set set was made in the second half of the 19th century. It is very likely that it was designed by the Horrix workshops, of the brothers Matthew and Willem HORRIX. Here the rustic style, also called in the 19th « Black Forest », expressed itself at its fully. All the various elements that are composing this dining room set were made of beech wood richly carved imitating nature, with a nice brown patina. Thus, those furniture seems to be made of twigs, roots, vines, flowers and fruits. Amusing details sprang out of the carving, such as snails, grasshoppers, beetles.… and different elements are in the form of plants, for instance the buffets' handles are mushrooms' shaped. The Dining Room set is composed of: - 2 SIDEBOARDS opening with two doors and two drawers. Topped with mercury mirrors (oxidized). Dim.: H. 78''3/4 x L. 53''9/16 x D. 24''3/16 cm. - 1 SERVER, trapezoidal, with Blue Turquin marble topped by a miror and a narrow shelf. It opens with two drawers and the jambs holding two shelves. Dim.: H. 59''5/8 x L. 53''1/8 x D. 20''1/2 cm. - 5 CURTAIN RODS, branch shaped and decorated with vine leaves, topped with a basket of grapes. Dim.: H. 13'' x L. 69''5/16 – 77''3/16 x D. 3''15/16 cm. - 1 round TABLE with a central quad (slightly piqued), that can be opend (extensions missing). Dim.: H.. 30''1/2 x L. 50'' x D. 52''3/8 cm. - 6 CHAIRS, all unique, each receiving a different carved decoration, with brown leather-upholstered. Dim.: H. 36''1/4 x L. 18''7/8 x D. 21''11/16 cm.

Gabriel VIARDOT (1830-1906) (attributed to) - A major Japanese wardrobe with large marquetry panels

Large armoire richly decorated in Far Eastern style attributed to Gabriel Viardot, parisian cabinet maker. It opens with two doors, each decorated with a Japanese panel adorned with birds such as hens, partridges and roosters in carved bone into a flowery landscape. These panels, of Japanese origin, are reused from pre-existing furniture. The richness of the decoration of these panels makes all the decorative quality of this cabinet. The cornice of the latter is decorated with a dragon and an asymmetrical frieze. The side panels and the apron are decorated with engraved bamboo. This armoire is very characteristic of the Japanese fashion that France experienced at the end of the 19th century. This taste for exoticism was manifested in particular in the eclectic interior design by wealthy collectors.

Émile GALLÉ, Jardiniere with a design inspired by the nature of Pharaonic Egypt, circa 1879-1890

This ceramic jardinière, with a design inspired by the natural world of ancient Egypt, was created by Émile Gallé in the late 19th century. Considered the founding father of Art Nouveau, Émile Gallé (1846-1904) took over the manufactory established by his father and gave it a decisive new direction, which he sustained throughout his life with his ever-renewed creativity. Ancient Egypt and its culture were among his favored sources of inspiration, as evidenced by this work. The artist selected two complementary colors, brown and blue, to structure the piece and give it a distinct harmony. The blue forms faux drips over the brown, perhaps evoking the Nile’s floods that fertilized Egyptian soil. The brown background features reed stems, reed flowers, and papyrus blooms. A flying scarab with wings resembling those of a bird references the god Khepri, the manifestation of the rising sun. The entire design is enhanced with gold accents. A similar piece in shape but featuring a Japanese-inspired design was sold at auction by Tajan in Paris in 2013. The Egyptian inspiration in this piece is also echoed in a jardinière shaped like a falcon housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. In that work, Gallé also incorporated designs of reeds and papyrus, as well as a flying scarab with large falcon-like wings.

Émile GALLÉ for L'ESCALIER DE CRISTAL, Small Tubular Japanese-Style Vase in Amber Glass

This vase was created by Émile Gallé for the Escalier de Cristal at the end of the 19th century. A pioneering figure of Art Nouveau, Émile Gallé was particularly influenced by Far Eastern arts. He collaborated numerous times with the prestigious Escalier de Cristal. Founded around 1808 by the widow Désarnaud, the Escalier de Cristal was taken over by the brothers Georges and Henri Pannier at the end of the 19th century. They adapted to the vogue of Japonism while maintaining the high quality that made the store's reputation. The amber glass of this vase is acid-engraved either in reserve or in relief, depending on the motifs, on a grooved background. Its decor is influenced by Japanese art: a flowering branch stands out against a mountainous background, with a large sun seeming to disappear behind a bouquet of trees. The neck of the vase is adorned with interlocking semi-circles arranged in scales. The vase is signed with the artist's initials separated by a Cross of Lorraine. Of all the artists who worked for the institution, only Émile Gallé was allowed to put his signature on the works he provided. The signature of the Escalier de Cristal is found on the base of the vase.

BOCH Frères, Art Nouveau Vase in Iridescent Faience Decorated with a Toad and Mushrooms, late 19th century

This iridescent faience vase with a toad and mushroom motif was created by the Boch Frères manufactory in the late 19th century. In 1841, Eugène and Victor Boch founded a fine faience manufactory called Kéramis in La Louvière, Belgium. The faience factory quickly flourished and diversified its production, adapting to the stylistic and technical evolutions of the time. This particular vase is emblematic of the Art Nouveau movement, as evidenced by its asymmetrical design directly inspired by nature: the body of the vase takes the form of a tree stump. Wider and rounded at the base due to roots seemingly ready to plunge into the earth, it rises to a certain height before ending with an irregular rim. Several mushrooms, among which an agaric, grow on it, and a toad climbs at the base of the stump. The vase features an iridescent glaze transitioning from pink to violet, lightening to white on the mushrooms and darkening to brown on the toad. This glazing demonstrates the high level of mastery achieved by certain artists and the most important manufactories at the end of the 19th century. The mark under the base indicates that the manufactory had a subsidiary in Thiais, in the Seine department. A vase of the same shape but with a slightly different glaze – where pink blends with yellow-orange, green, and blue (and the toad appears black) – was noted by expert Alain Cical.

Émile GALLÉ, Plant holder with dragonflies, circa 1880

This small zoomorphic planter was created by Émile Gallé around 1880. Considered the founding father of Art Nouveau, Émile Gallé took over the factory founded by his father and gave it a decisive impetus, which he supported throughout his life with ever-renewed creativity. For this planter, the artist drew inspiration, as he often did in his work and in Art Nouveau, from a natural element: a dragonfly. The insect with its prominent eyes wraps its wings around the structure of the object, which seems to extend them to form a basin. The whole piece displays a delicate polychromy enhanced with gold. On the body of the planter, other insects echo it, thus bringing the decoration to life. The planter is signed twice under the base: “E ☨ G / deposé” and “E. Gallé / Nancy”. Gallé designed other zoomorphic planters in a similar style to this one, dated 1881. The Musée d’Orsay, for example, has in its collections a zoomorphic planter of Egyptian inspiration representing the god Horus. As with our planter, the body of the animal is at one end of the object, while the body is made up of its wings.
