Very nice 18th century mantel piece in a marble called ''Gris des Ardennes'' or ''Grey Sainte Anne'' from Belgium. The square rosettes above the jambs were carved in the white part of the marble, creating a visual contrast to the rest of the mantel.
Saint Anne grey marble comes from a quarry in Gougnies (Belgium). It was mostly used in Louis XVI and Louis Philippe furniture. There are four console shelves made in this marble in Napoleon's dining room in the Château of Compiègne. This fireplace is sold without any insert nor marble floor but those can be made on order.
