Maison MARNYHAC (attrib.) – Gilt bronze openwork mirror with Vietnamese-style decoration
Dimensions
Width 59'' 150cm
Height 50'' ¾ 129cm
Origin:
France, late 19th century
Attributed to Maison MARNYHAC, this large gilt bronze mirror features an openwork frame inspired by Vietnamese iconography. This type of creation reflects the orientalist taste that influenced French decorative arts at the end of the 19th century.
The composition is symmetrical: the upper corners are adorned with key-pattern motifs reminiscent of architectural ornament, while the sides and lower border are enriched with finely pierced decoration depicting birds perched among blooming plum trees. These scenes reflect traditional Sino-Annamite themes of renewal and harmony with nature, rendered here in a stylized yet naturalistic manner.
Incised geometric patterns—such as Greek key borders and lozenges—structure the frame’s layout. At the top, the ensemble is crowned with a stylized mask, either nghê or mặt hổ phù, both apotropaic motifs commonly found in Vietnamese decorative arts. This mask is topped by an architectural form resembling a stupa, reinforcing the spiritual character of the design.
This mirror exemplifies the artistic dialogue between Far Eastern traditions and their reinterpretation by French workshops such as MARNYHAC during the late 19th century.
