Neo-Gothic style oak wainscoting featuring a "linen-fold" motif, approximately 7 linear meters

Height: 151 cm / 59'' ½

Origin:
France, 19th century

This oak wainscoting consists of several bays organized into three superimposed registers. The upper register features a row of small, molded rectangular panels. The central register—the tallest of the three—is decorated with "linen-fold" (or *pli de serviette*) panels, where the vertical folds terminate at the top and bottom in ogee-arched cutouts. The lower register contains larger, molded panels, which rest upon a baseboard (plinth). The entire assembly is crowned by a molded cornice that functions as a plate rail or dado cap.

The "linen-fold" motif, which emerged in Northern European woodwork and furniture during the late Middle Ages, mimics the folds of fabric hanging vertically. Revived in the 19th century by the Neo-Gothic movement, this style was particularly favored for the interior paneling of libraries, dining rooms, and studies.

The lot also includes a two-door cupboard integrated into the same decorative scheme—complete with its original hinges and lock—as well as additional panel sections featuring cutouts, which may facilitate the adaptation of the woodwork to a new space.

Some of the elements have been stripped to reveal the natural oak, while others retain an old coat of white paint.
