Style romanticism / Ref.14538

Nocturnal variation, a rare creation by Emile GALLÉ

Dimensions:
Width: 17'' ⅜  44cm
Depth: 9'' ⅞  25cm

Origin:
19th century, French

Status:
Good condition

Our earthenware dish, enhanced with gilding, is an exceptional object. Made between 1863 and 1890, it bears the signature of Emile Gallé, founder of the Nancy School.

Its singular shape can first of all evoke a cloud. But the explanation is even more subtle. It represents an old medieval castle, covered in foliage, at the water's edge. Bats are flying in the sky. They bring an air of mystery to this landscape inspired by dark romanticism. Indeed, the decor evokes in every way the drawings of Victor Hugo, whose verses often inspired Gallé.

Now we understand the curious shapes that border the dish and surround the scene: they are two bat silhouettes. A comparable dish is kept at the Ecole de Nancy museum. But our copy is richer. It is the only known example showing the application of gilding, which results in additional cooking. This is a truly exceptional piece.
