This large dish, shaped by the great ceramist Théodore Deck and painted by Eugène Gluck, is a creation dated 1866.
Entirely decorative, our piece presents a scene worthy of a painting by Antoine Watteau. This is a romantic celebration in a bucolic setting. The costumes refer to the imagination of the Renaissance.
The center of the decor is occupied by a young girl on an escarpolette, a seat suspended by ropes allowing one to swing.
This is a game that can turn out to be mischievous, when the long johns or the petticoats are revealed by the wind.
Two young women, richly adorned, are in conversation while a couple is talking about their love affair.
The ceramist Théodore Deck is renowned for his technical know-how and his collaborations with artists. Here, he draws attention to the talent of Eugène Gluck, painter and illustrator, like him from Haut-Rhin.
Théodore Deck and Eugène Gluck collaborated from 1862. At this time, Gluck presented picturesque historical scenes at the Salon, in the vein of this decor.
Works by Deck are kept at the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
