This mantelpiece features ornamentation typical of the Louis XVI style: the jambs are adorned with tapered, fluted columns topped with acanthus leaves; the lintel features a frieze of Greek waves framed by pearls; the hearth is defined by a frieze of ovals and darts forming right angles. The lintel features a rare carved medallion. Despite certain features which appear idealized, this finely carved portrait is not based on an antique model but rather on an individual portrait. This female portrait is framed by flowers, a frieze of pearls, acanthus leaves, and topped with a ribbon bow typical of the Louis XVI style.
