Maison CARDEILHAC, decorative plate in glass and gilt silver

Dimensions

Height 1'' ⅝  4cm
diameter: 9'' ⅞  25cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

Founded in 1804 by Vital Antoine Cardeilhac, Maison Cardeilhac distinguished itself through high-quality solid silverware and fine table cutlery. The firm notably became the official cutlery supplier to Napoleon III in 1855 and was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1878.

This flower-shaped decorative plate bears the hallmark of Ernest Cardeilhac: the initials “EC” accompanied by a crowned Legion of Honour and a crescent below. This mark allows the piece to be dated between 1885 and 1904. The plate features an organic, flowing design typical of Art Nouveau. The glass petals are finely engraved, while the gilt-silver base enhances the piece with elegant simplicity.

By launching a line of artistic silverware in 1885, Ernest Cardeilhac opened collaborations with artists such as Émile Gallé and Adrien Dalpayrat. The period from 1885 to 1904 marked the company’s golden age, during which it produced and sold complete solid-silver table services, tea and coffee sets, candlesticks, mounts for artists’ vases, and related works. The achievements of Maison Cardeilhac were rewarded with a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.

Remaining a family business for four generations, the company was ultimately acquired by Christofle in 1951.
