L’Escalier de Cristal (attributed to) Gilt-bronze liqueur barrel with its stand
Dimensions
Width 5'' ⅞ 15cm
Height 10'' ¼ 26cm
Depth: 9'' ⅞ 25cm
This liqueur barrel and its stand originally formed part of a complete liqueur set, which would have included a display stand and a suite of glasses. The present model shows similarities to the double-reservoir barrel preserved in the Musée des Arts décoratifs de Namur (inv. AHC 478 A–B). The wide stylistic range found in objects stamped “Escalier de Cristal” reflects the longevity of the firm’s production. The decoration of the stand suggests a date around 1819: the motif of confronted swans flanking an antique vase is characteristic of the late First Empire, extending into the Restoration period. The gilt-bronze stopper is finely chased and adorned with fruit and foliate motifs, demonstrating the high quality of craftsmanship associated with the house.
