Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse, “Allegory of Day and Night” Faience Cache-Pot

Dimensions

Height 17'' ⅜  44cm
diameter: 21'' ¼  54cm

Origin:
France, 19th century

This large handled faience cache-pot depicts the Allegory of Day and Night. The polychrome decoration is organized around two principal scenes representing the dawn of day and the arrival of night, framed by flowing lines and vegetal ornamentation characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. The artist’s signature, Louis Carrier-Belleuse, is visible on the exterior of the piece.

Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse (1848–1913), a French painter, sculptor, and ceramist, and the son of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, was appointed artistic director of the Manufacture de Choisy-le-Roi in 1889. This work illustrates the successful application of his sculptural practice to the decorative arts, demonstrating how his mastery of form and composition was translated into the medium of fine faience during the late 19th century.
