This faience jardinière features an ovoid body with a flared neck, resting on a pedestal foot and flanked by two detached side handles. The body is decorated with a bas-relief illustrating the mythological episode of Bacchus and Ariadne at Naxos. On one side, Bacchus appears mounted and accompanied by bacchantes; on the other, Ariadne is surrounded by her retinue. The composition is highlighted along the lower register by a frieze of vine leaves and grape clusters. The piece is finished with a nuanced polychrome glaze.
Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse (1848–1913), sculptor and ceramist and son of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, was appointed artistic director of the Manufacture de Choisy-le-Roi (Hautin-Boulenger & Cie) in 1889. This model, designed in 1891, illustrates the adaptation of his classical sculptural practice to the production of fine faience decorative wares intended for the decorative arts.
