Important Henri IV period cast iron fireback, centered with the royal arms of France displaying three fleurs-de-lis, encircled by the collar of the Order of Saint Michael and surmounted by the royal crown. The composition is framed by an elaborate trophy of arms including helmets, cuirasses, halberds, cannons and military standards, celebrating the power of the French monarchy. The decoration is further enriched with several crowned "H" royal cyphers, the personal emblem of King Henri IV, whose comparison with contemporary royal bookbindings confirms the attribution to his reign. The quality of its execution and the richness of its iconography make this fireback a remarkable testimony to a royal commission of the early 17th century, intended to express the restoration of royal authority in the aftermath of the French Wars of Religion.
