18th century fireplace mantel in two colors of marble

18th century, from the Charente region.

Status:
The shelf has been restored.

Highly decorative fireplace mantel from the 18th century using two kinds of marbles. Rouge Royal (Royal red) for the mantel shelf and decorative inlays ; and Noir de Mazy (black Mazy marble) for the header and jambs.

A very similar mantel is in the museum of La Rochelle.
Royal red marble comes from quarries in Haumont in Belgium. A very popular marble used in furniture and decoration. A very fine pinkish to beige cement with white flames and fragments of shells.
Mazy black marble is from Mazy in Belgium. A very homogenous stone, used a lot to make clocks during the 19th century.
This fireplace is sold without any insert nor marble floor but they can be made to order.
