A fine pair of cast-iron garden vases, featuring a richly ornate design inspired by the grand stone and bronze vases that adorned the parterres of 18th-century French formal gardens.

Resting on a square base, each vase rises from a gadrooned pedestal accented by a band of foliage. The ovoid body is encircled by a broad wreath of finely veined acanthus leaves; these rise in high relief before curling downwards beneath a smooth central band. The upper section, shaped like a flared basin, is decorated with a register of water leaves and finished with a molded rim featuring a *rais-de-cœur* (heart-and-dart) motif.

On either side, two bold bearded satyr masks form the handles; with their grimacing faces and hair and beards rendered in thick, curly locks, they sport long, coiled ram's horns that arch over the rim to create the gripping points. The quality of the casting, the vigor of the modeling, and the depth of the relief work attest to the craftsmanship of the great 19th-century French art foundries, which revived and disseminated royal designs from Versailles and Marly for the ornamentation of parks, terraces, and entrance steps.
