This pair of cast-iron vases features an ovoid body resting on a pedestal foot and topped by a flared neck accented with a band. Each vase is flanked by two scrolled handles; their attachments take the form of grotesque masks with bold features—scrolled eyebrows, bared fangs, and ragged beards. These masks are surmounted by cloud and bead motifs and extend outward into openwork foliage that follows the curve of the vase's shoulder.
The vases fit into circular, molded bases encircled by an openwork Greek-key frieze. These bases rest on four cabriole legs adorned with geometric scrollwork—inspired by archaic Chinese bronze ornamentation—and terminate in claw feet. The legs retain their gilding, which contrasts with the dark patina of the vases.
This decorative vocabulary—combining grotesque masks, Greek-key friezes, and stylized ornaments—reflects the fascination with Far Eastern art that characterized French decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century, a trend widely disseminated by metal founders thanks to the versatility of cast iron.
