Style Art Nouveau / Ref.6128

Glazed stoneware fireplace, signed “Grès de Bigot”, circa 1895

Dimensions
Width 41'' ⅜  105cm
Height 39'' ¾  101cm
Depth: 12'' ¼  31cm

Art Nouveau-style fireplace made entirely of glazed stoneware decorated with molded tiles, attributable to the workshops of Jean-Baptiste Bigot, active in Mer (Loir-et-Cher) at the end of the 19th century. The entablature, uprights, and shelf are adorned with raised glazed tiles, alternating stylized plant motifs and geometric ornaments, in a soft palette of beige, milky white, and bluish highlights.

The lower right-hand side of the fireplace bears the intaglio inscription "Grès de Bigot," the characteristic signature of this manufacturer renowned for its architectural and decorative glazed stoneware productions.

The tiles feature a crackled and nuanced glaze, typical of the late 19th-century taste for material and color effects inspired by Japonism and medieval ceramics. This type of fireplace often adorned modernist, bourgeois, or artistic interiors.

A rare piece, combining technical mastery and decorative modernity, emblematic of the revival of the arts of fire in France around 1900.
