Rare Empire period mantel in belgian petit granit from the 19th century. It presents a gilded bronze decoration, finely chiseled on the theme of Antiquity. The entablature is adorned with trophies on either side and a bronze depicting the death of Archimedes, inspired by the story told by Plutarch. According to him, in 212 BC, when Syracuse fell to the Romans, a soldier found Archimedes drawing circles. The soldier disturbed Archimedes in his activity and the scientist told him : « Do not disturb my circles! ». The Roman soldier is said to have killed Archimedes with a single blow of his sword, offended by the old man's refusal to submit to his authority. The pillar-like jambs are decorated with gilded bronze stars and torches. They rest on square bases.
This fireplace is sold without any fireplace insert nor marble floor but could be made to order (please ask for marble availability).
