Dimensions:
Width: 68'' ⅛  173cm
Height: 110'' ¼  280cm
Depth: 22''   56cm

Origin:
France, Late 19th century

The realization of this exceptional carved sycamore fireplace is attributed to the Maison des Bambous by Perret and Vibert. The Japanese decor on a fireplace is quite rare and therefore remarkable. The jambs of the fireplace are carved with elephant heads whose defenses are made out of ivory. The mantelpiece is surmounted by a mirror whose frame of carved wood is particularly worked. A threatening dragon with impressive dimensions overlooks the mirror.
The fireplace is decorated in different places with Tonkin mother-of-pearl inlays with floral plant elements or a war scene.

The Maison des Bambous by Perret and Vibert was founded in 1872 at number 33 rue du Quatre-Septembre. Specializing in small bamboo and wicker furniture and seating, they quickly turned to the manufacture of carved wood furniture of Japanese and Chinese inspiration. Around 1910, they opened a branch at 170, boulevard Haussmann where they will stay until 1994, year of the final closure of the Maison des Bambous.
