This rare turtle-shaped clock was created by Gustave Isaac Lévy and Jollet & Cie for Escalier de Cristal. The stylized shell, decorated with cloisonné enamel, forms the dial on which there is a snail linked to the clock's internal mechanism. The decoration forms cartouches with various geometric patterns featuring Japanese-style numerals. For this sumptuous gild-bronize and enamel object, Escalier de Cristal adapted the legend of the Minogame turtle, which originates from Japanese folklore, to suit the tastes of the 19th-century French public. After lying at the bottom of a lake for 10,000 years, the turtle's shell is covered with algae, forming what looks like of tail. This is precisely what gives the animal its name, minogame ("cape turtle"). Our clock shows the moment when the turtle awakens from its slumber and seizes a crab hanging from a branch above the water. The crab is made of gilded bronze and rendered with great naturalism.

Our clock is a fine example of how the vogue for Japonism, which began in the 1860s, affected all artistic fields, from painting to the decorative arts. The creations of luxury houses such as Escalier de Cristal, Daï Nippon, and La Maison des Bambous by Perret & Vibert bear witness to this craze for the Far East.
Movement has not been tested.
