This antique Louis XIV style fireback was made during the 18th century. A sovereign, crowned with laurels by the renowned, gives alms to a peasant woman.
A same model fireback is now exhibited in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, in a somptuous fireplace with bronze sphinxes coming from the salon of the Hôtel de Serres, circa 1780-1795.
