Wear and oxidation consistent with prolonged outdoor use
Architectural element in moulded cast iron in the form of a dolphin, forming part of a rainwater drainage system. The wide-open mouth of the dolphin served as the water outlet, while the upward-curled tail provided the connection to the gutter above. The body of the creature is rendered with care, the curly mane, protruding eye and collar scales faithfully depicted despite the wear of time. The cast iron displays a fine aged patina of rust and moss, bearing witness to long outdoor use.
This type of element, produced in series by the great French foundries in the nineteenth century, adorned the façades of town houses, châteaux and public buildings. The dolphin, a royal symbol and attribute of Neptune, was one of the most favoured motifs for this type of architectural use.
