A spectacular piece with high-relief decoration, this vase was created by the sculptor and ceramist Eduard Stellmacher. It is numbered and bears the engraved stamp of the "Amphora" factory, famous in North Bohemia. Made around 1900, our vase is typically Art Nouveau (Jugendstil in Germany and Austria). It is in keeping with the taste for Japonism that characterised the decorative arts at the time. Made from polychrome glazed ceramic, the iridescent vase features gold highlights. The decoration is luminous, mysterious and precious. The body of the dragon, a fantastic creature typical of the Asian imagination, is modelled with great precision. Of German origin, Stellmacher took over the manufacture created by his father and known as Amphora. Stellmacher's decorations of chimerical or disturbing animals (bats, dragons, lizards, octopuses), combined with highly complex colours, made the company famous.
